📜 Historical Context
This bond was issued during the French Intervention in Mexico (1861–1867), while Mexico was under threat from the French-backed Emperor Maximilian I. President Benito Juárez and the Mexican republican government were in exile and desperately needed funds to sustain their government and military. This bond was sold primarily to American investors sympathetic to Juárez's republican cause.
The inclusion of U.S. presidents (Lincoln and Washington) alongside Mexican leaders served both a diplomatic and propaganda purpose — strengthening the appeal to U.S. buyers and reinforcing shared republican ideals.
