Black Eagle bond 1843 $20,000

The “Águila Negra” (Black Eagle) bond — formally known as the Tesorería General de la República Mexicana 20,000 Pesos Bond dated 1843 — is one of the most iconic, visually striking, and historically significant bonds ever issued by Mexico. It is highly prized by collectors of antique bonds, Latin American financial history, and revolutionary-era memorabilia.

🇲🇽 1843 Tesorería General de la República Mexicana – 20,000 Pesos "Águila Negra" Bond

🦅 Nickname: "Águila Negra" (Black Eagle)

This nickname comes from the large, central black eagle motif — a powerful depiction of the Mexican national symbol: the eagle devouring a snake while perched on a cactus. It’s one of the most dramatic and artistic bond designs of the 19th century.

📜 Historical Context

  • Date Issued: 1843

  • Issuer: Tesorería General de la República Mexicana (Treasury of the Mexican Republic)

  • Political Climate: Mexico was in a post-independence crisis, facing instability, internal revolts, and mounting war debts (including debts from the war with Spain, and later with the U.S.).

  • Purpose: This bond was issued as part of efforts to restructure national debt and secure loans for military and administrative costs.

This predates the Mexican-American War (1846–1848) but comes after independence (1821) and the failed empire of Agustín de Iturbide.
